TOD 6/30/13

Sorry everyone, this post is really late in the day, but that is life...

Isn't this sad how true this is? I am very blessed that we do not have health insurance, yes, I did say NO HEALTH INSURANCE! If you eat right and treat your body as God has asked us to, there really shouldn't be any need for it.

Tooth remineralization...link

After reading this, I will not be buying toothpaste again! There are many DIY toothpaste recipes out there, and if they call for glycerin, you can substitute coconut oil.

I did post a link a couple weeks ago about a remineralizing toothpaste you can make. After some thought, I will be starting with a simple toothpaste that the whole family can get use to, then progress to that recipe if need be. Right now, I need a kid (and husband) friendly recipe that everyone won't gag over (and can be ingested safely).

TOD 6/26/13

Sometimes in life, you must learn more than you need to, to thrive and not just survive in this world.

I love it that my daughter learns almost everything right beside me. She is very enthusiastic about learning all she can about plants and animals. I also do not shelter her from things that she may encounter in this world. She must be able to defend herself from evil. As things arise in our life, then these are the times I believe God gives us to use as teaching opportunities. We must not shelter or lie to our children. We are called to teach them and bring them up to be warriors for God.

I thought this would be of interest to some of my readers. I could only wish I had chickens! Maybe someday my city will reconsider their stance?

I thought we could all use another funny one today. I know I could use a whole weeks worth right now. (Maybe this is what I will do all week...)

I will not buy anything anymore that says these things. Yogurt is a main food that I can think of that does this. I cannot believe that people feed young children low fat and fat free yogurt! Children need the most natural fats they can get in their diet to promote healthy growth. Ever since my daughter was born, I started buying Stonyfield Yo Baby and whole milk yogurts , then we moved on to Brown Cow (for different flavors), then Noosa (even more unique flavors), now we will be enjoying Kalona (grass fed milk)starting next month.

Grass fed dairy ... link

I just had to let everyone know of a company I just came across. Kalona Super Natural is a company that has grass fed dairy products that are vat processed. I feel blessed we can get this through our co-op for much less than anywhere else.

TOD 6/21/13 ... funny

I just had to give everyone another laugh.  It's amazing how many ads are like this and people freak out about it, before understanding and knowing the whole truth.

Heart, Hands, Home: Light Sugar Syrup (a corn syrup substitute)... link

I found another blog today and she has many recipes and good ideas.  I found her through searching for things to do with my new Food Saver. I got the mason jar attachments and am planning on going through my entire kitchen to seal jars that I do not get into often. I may even have to buy more 1/2 gallon Ball jars, so I can keep items, such as beans and bulk spices that I plan on buying in the future from our co-op.

My family has been blessed that we have not been to a doctor in 3 years for anything, even then, it was for the so called "Well Baby" check-ups, which are pretty useless. With an organic diet and treating minor illnesses at home with homeopathy and herbs, there is no need for insurance, especially since our system, if you think about it is NOT health care, but illness management...

Thought I would give everyone this thought, since everyone seems to buy sunscreen and other toxic products heavily during this time of year.

I do not use sunscreen, nor do I put it on my children, unless I know for a fact we will be somewhere without shade for very long time (maybe once a year). Even then I buy an all natural sun protectant. I am currently looking into homemade sun protection. I have heard coconut oil is a good sun protectant as well as carrot essential oil.

Thought of the day 6/14/13

We do try to buy from these companies. Buying in bulk from our co-op and purchasing the rest from Vitacost really do help keep the costs down.

If you think of it though, if you invest in healthy foods, then you shouldn't be sick often... You really do get what you pay for.

It's also pretty exciting that just recently Wholefoods and Target have announced that they will be selling only non-GMO food by the end of 2014.

An awesome homemaking blog...link

The following link is to an awesome blog/website that I am sure will be helping me further save money with feeding my family and maybe some other things too. There is so much information. I have been reading post after post for the past week and I am still far from reading everything. I really want to just print everything out, but that would be a lot of paper!

I am blessed that I have a local co-op that I can buy items, such as she suggests in bulk, which are far less expensive than getting them at my local health food store.

I have been blessed to be able to see behind the scenes in a pediatrician's office, and it isn't pretty. I also pray for all those poor children that I held down to get poison injected to them. I wish I could go to every last one of them and apologize for being so uneducated and let them know that vaccines are extremely harmful!

Remineralizing teeth... link

I just happened to come across this this morning and thought I should share this. I am already starting to do some of these things, but as soon as my current tooth paste is finished, I will be making this. Hopefully I can remember to post an update sometime later after I have started using it.

The next few days will be about how vaccination is harmful.

Lemon (or citrus) vinegar

Somewhere along the way. in the past month, I came across lemon vinegar, to help clean those stubborn greasy messes. I decided to try it and now I just have to share it with my readers! I usually just clean with straight white distilled vinegar that I get in bulk at Sam's Club, but this stuff rocks.

It is so simple.

Make lemonade (well, that's what we did...)

stick the lemon peels, cut into sections, into a quart canning jar
pour white vinegar over these
put a lid on
let set for 1-2 weeks on top of your fridge or in a cabinet (don't forget about it though)
strain into a spray bottle
use it on everything!

If you don't like lemon scent, then you can try it with oranges or even grapefruit too!

I would recommend using organic, so they don't have all those yucky sprays and pesticides on them.

So, there you go. Easy homemade cleaner that really works.

Fermented foods

As all of you know, I started fermenting with kombucha. Now that I have that down pretty well, it is now time to move on to fermented foods. I am planning on starting with carrots and sauerkraut. Maybe, just maybe, if I make it, my husband will finally try it and eat it (I'm not holding my breath though...).

I bought fermenting lids on e-Bay to go on my Ball quart and half gallon jars to start. Of course as soon as I bought them, I figured out a cheaper way to do it, but isn't that always how it goes?
My idea is to get the airlock fermentation vents with the jug stoppers and drill a hole to accommodate the stopper into the plastic ball jar lids that I have already. I'm sure that a wine making store sell these locally. Maybe, if I need more, I'll do that.

On many other sites that have fancy fermentation gadgets, they recommend these glass weights, which are pretty cool, but start at $10! I have read on a few other sites that have more primitive roots that people used to use fist sized smooth rocks. So, off to my rock garden I will go, then bring them in and give them a good scrub (or even put them in the dishwasher with no soap). Hey, maybe it will even add some minerals while we are at it?

I will be using my recipes from my Nourishing Traditions book, especially since I have raw milk to get nutrient dense whey from.

I will try to post pictures when I start fermenting in about a week (as soon as the lids get here and I can get some organic cabbage at the store).

Thought of the day 6/9/13

Sorry everyone! Has a wondrous day with my husband and the kids yesterday and this totally slipped my mind. I just knew I was forgetting SOMETHING...

Yes, why is that?

I wanted to post a pic of the ingredients of breastmilk vs. formula, but I couldn't get it to load right. If you would like to find out you can follow this link.

Thought of the day 6/7/13

I really like this. I have had a few people in my life that totally oppose what I am doing at first, then a while later after they see how it benefits me or my family, they start accepting it and want to incorporate it into their lives.

I really like this chart! Although a lot of us think it needs to be presented as a formula fed baby with the myriad of ailments they have because of the nutritional deficiencies from formula. We won't even go into what vaccines do...

Thought of the day 6/4/13

This is really gross, don't you think? Yet I know for a fact that Wal-Mart does this and probably Giant Eagle also. I have definitely gotten sick from Wal-Mart meat before, as well as a few other items from the deli and bakery, but that's another post...

Thought of the day 6/3/13

This is a wonderful reason to know your farmer and eat locally grown cow, pig, sheep, goat, and chicken! Most organic farms will let you come to the farm and get to know them as well as see the animals up close. We are blessed to know our farmers and know exactly how they treat their animals and what the animals are fed.

Thought of the day 6/2/13

I have made my own butter before, using the raw milk from our herdshare. It is easy, but right at this time I am doing so many other things that I am completely exhaused by the time the day is finished. I hope to start making butter again one day, but for now, we are buying the best we can. BJ's has organic butter for a reasonable price.
